Hino Cars: :Hino Contessa 1300 Coupe
Delux Model and Standard Model

In fact, the model that was generally marketed of Hino Contessa 1300 Coupe is called a deluxe model. According to "the range of a notification of a new car and the document" to the Ministry of Transport of those days, there are the deluxe model and standard model that there was not in a catalogue. It is clear from an existing document (Car specifications 1968, supervised by Automotive division, The Ministry of Transportation). The specification is as follows.

In fact, I do not understand how it was sold virtually. There is not it on a catalogue either, and there is not a price list, too. However, a car is sold in clear form in a market. I suppose that most of people of purchase performed the upgrading that took in a demand as same as Sedan's standard model. In those days, Hino and other many makers have been accepted to upgrade the standard model by demand of buyers.

Let try to validate the standard model with a notification of a new car and the document, some valuable pictures, and existing cars.

Coupe's Standard model in early production. Single light system and no mouldings typically.

<From New Model - PD300 (An extraction of notification document to the Ministry of Transport)>

Hino PD300 passenger car is two doors coupe based on Hino PD100 passenger car. A point of difference with PD100 is as follows:

  • 4 ride capacity and two door coupe,
  • Much of comfort of a front seat, and arranged to suitable sporty driving with indoor equipment, i.e, bucket seat, meter equipments and operation device,
  • A body is the style with low air drag and sporty,
  • The engine is high performance that was modified intake & exhaust shapes, valve spring, and cam shaft with 9.0 of compression ratio, maximum power of 65PS/5500epm, torque of 10.0kb/3800rpm, to improve high speed capability,
  • A transmission is 4 speed in forward gear and reverse gear with synchromesh for all of forward. Control is mechanical remote control by a floor lever,
  • Improved driving stability by reinforced front and back suspension including springs, and a steering return spring,
  • The brakes improved stability in high speed by making it a front Disk and a rear Leading-Trailing to improve high speed stability,

<Standard model in the market>

  • Very simple interior decoration. This one was delivered to competition purpose. It equipped an oil pressure gauge, and it is very special decoration and agreeable guages without chrome that was purposed for competition. The time is January, 1966.

  • A side view of the car. It has no unnecessary mouldings and marks. Low downed ride height seems it has equipped heavy duty suspension. Also, dual head light was equipped.

  • In January, 1967, it is a racing coupe based on standard model at Funabashi Circuit in All Japan Car Club Competition. This car backed in Japan from USA tuned up by Team Samurai won overwhelming victory in T-1 class against Mini, Nissan, and so on. A picture is from Car Magazine (Baseball Magazine Corp.) in March, 1967.

  • A coupe standard records tail wing performance of GT Proto. Perhaps a place is Yatabe (JARI - Japan Automobile Research Institute). No bumper's guide with rubber protection, Single light gussed with shape, then no moulding on window rubber channes. It supposes the photography time to be 1965 ( in investigating).

  • Test in Fuji Speedway of LA Times GP championship car (this was coupe standard base), March, 1967. The left car is standard obviously. Nothing several mouldings and a characteristic of bumper shows it. If seeing more details, this cars equips exhaust muffler of sports kits and 14 inches diameter disk wheels for one type of show model.

  • This is Contessa Coupe exported comparatively recently by Japan made rescue in New Zealand by an enthusiast recently. Perhaps I suppose this to be a standard base.

  • The greatest characteristic is a front seat of this car. This is a coupe seat without reclining mechanism that was very rarely seen in those days. It is a simple system performing some angle adjustment for rear seat riding into. This seat in itself is drawing itself of the Ministry of Transportation's notification document.
