日野自動車は1959年（昭和34年）にその社名を日野ジーゼル工業（株）から日野自動車工業（株）と改称した。これは大型車メーカーから小型乗用車を加えて総合自動車メーカーを目指すことを自他共に認めるものであった。そうした中、純国産小型乗用車コンテッサ900の開発完了を前にした1960年（昭和35年）、早くも待望の上級車、コンテッサ1300の開発が始まっていたのだ。

3. Encounter with Michelotti
In 1959, Hino Motors, Ltd. (hereafter Hino) renamed from Hino Diesel industry K.K. to Hino automobile K.K. This was something which both oneself and others recognizes the fact that they aim toward the comprehensive automaker including the small-sized car from the full-sized car manufacturer. While such as that, the development of Contessa 1300, long-awaited upper-class car had already started in 1960 that is time before the completion of the development of pure domestic small-sized car Contessa 900.
